- Spend less time on Facebook and TikTok
- “A total stupid waste of time”-JPMorgan CEO targeting two social media apps
- Better use of time would be reading widely and consuming history books
At a recent event at the Georgetown Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon shared his thoughts on how young people can better utilize their time. When asked for advice, he emphatically recommended that students cut back on social media, calling platforms like TikTok and Facebook a “total stupid waste of time.”
Dimon emphasized the importance of reading, particularly history, as a way to gain valuable insights. He encouraged students to seek diverse perspectives, stating, “If you’re a Democrat, read the good Republican viewpoints, and vice versa.”
He highlighted the significance of learning from historical figures, mentioning names like Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, and Sam Walton as inspirations. “You only learn by reading and engaging with others,” he said.
Unlike many of his peers, Dimon maintains a low social media profile, primarily using LinkedIn and admitting to a secret Instagram account in 2021. He has also expressed concerns about social media’s negative impacts, particularly in his annual letter to shareholders. Dimon noted issues like election manipulation and the detrimental effects on children’s mental health, urging social media companies to take swift action to address these challenges.
Dimon’s message is clear: prioritizing reading and critical thinking can lead to a more enriching and informed life.
